The program at Rhinebeck Equine will provide veterinary students an opportunity for an in-depth clinical experience in a referral hospital and full-service ambulatory practice. The clinic is staffed by specialists in surgery, internal medicine, theriogenology, reproduction, ophthalmology and dermatology as well as experienced ambulatory practitioners. The practice is committed to providing the student with a rewarding clinical educational experience. The scope and depth of any hands-on experience will vary with the maturity, aptitude, clinical skills, and “common sense” of each extern. The student’s primary responsibilities will involve assisting the interns, specialists, and technicians with the evaluation, diagnostics, management, and care of hospital patients, as well as participating in surgery and anesthesia for cases that require it. While accompanying ambulatory clinicians, the externs will become familiar with ambulatory emergencies, routine health care, theriogenology, and lameness evaluations. Emergencies may be seen on a rotating schedule with other visiting students. The students will also have the opportunity to participate in teaching rounds, journal club, and grand rounds with our interns and specialists. The program is suitable for students with aspirations for a career in any aspect of equine practice.

Interested applicants should submit the application form and send a brief letter of intent and CV by e-mail. If you are unable to complete an externship due to COVID restrictions, you may still apply for the internship if you complete a remote interview. Externships are strongly encouraged to ensure a mutually good fit. All veterinary students are welcome to apply; however, third-year students exploring the possibility of the internship will be given preference. Documentation of liability coverage through the PLIT student program, or equivalent, is required before starting your externship.
