Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (AVES) is seeking two full time hospitalists to join our multi-disciplinary hospital. We are seeking a veterinarian with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience to work alongside our emergency veterinarians and our specialist to help provide care to patients admitted to our ICU. The eligible applicant should have a solid foundation of veterinary medical knowledge, excellent multi-tasking abilities and effective communication skills. The applicant should lead by example and always maintain a professional demeanor while adhering to our core values including kindness, collaboration, integrity, and consistency. We desire an individual that strives to enhance their medical knowledge and skill set while working alongside our highly skilled doctors and technical staff. Our specialty services include Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Oncology and Cardiology (provided by CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets).
Responsibilities of the position include:
Overseeing patients admitted to the ICU that are not being managed by our specialists or senior emergency veterinarians.
Perform necessary medical procedures on hospitalized patients
Offering the highest standard of medicine to all clients while having the adaptability to work within clients’ financial means.
Providing consistent, clear, and comprehensive communication to clients and the referring community.
Facilitating in-house transfers from the emergency department to specialty departments when needed through collaborative patient rounds.
Contributing to relaying diagnostic results to owners and in-house DVM’s for currently hospitalized patients or those previously evaluated via the emergency service.
Collaborate with colleagues and leadership to enhance departmental workflow and standard operating procedures.
Contribute to staff and doctor training in conjunction with our education department
Attend departmental and staff meetings on a routine basis
Occasional receiving of patients via the emergency service after mutual agreement between the applicant and medical director.

AVES was established in 2014 and has had exponential growth since its establishment. AVES is locally managed by one of the original founders, Lindsay Vaughn, DVM, DACVECC and joined the NVA- Compassion-First Network in 2021 to accelerate their growth and network with other best-in-class specialty and emergency hospitals. In early 2024, AVES will be moving to a new state-of-the-art facility that is approximately 45,000 square feet and numerous additional services will be added to our hospital.
