The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 100,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director to join our Animal Welfare Division located in our headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.
This two-year grant funded position is responsible for working collaboratively to improve the welfare of dogs in commercial breeding facilities through targeted education for veterinarians assisting these facilities. Duties will include creating educational resources that support quality in canine health and welfare assessment, designing and implementing animal care and use programs, and communication strategies for working with breeders. The individual filling this position can work remotely. Less than 20% travel.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMA’s mission, additional qualifications include:
Must hold a DVM/VMD or equivalent
Minimum of two years’ clinical practice experience with a demonstrated knowledge of, and expertise in animal health and welfare and scientific inquiry
Must be able to perform interdisciplinary literature searches
Must be able to critically evaluate scientific studies (including appropriateness of study design and quality of data)
Must be able to synthesize information, and write clearly, logically, and persuasively on complex scientific subjects for scientific and non-scientific audiences
Must be able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
Must be able to effectively interact and communicate with members of the scientific and non-scientific communities
Skilled in facilitation of consensus among multiple perspectives
