The Position

The Medical Officer at the Essex Tech program works onsite at the Essex Technical and Agricultural High school in Danvers, Massachusetts as a general practitioner capable and knowledgeable in the areas of medicine, routine surgery and basic dentistry. He/she will be responsible for oversight of the veterinary assistant/practice manager and support the Essex Tech Certified Veterinary Technicians in their role as clinical instructor for Essex Tech students in training.

The Medical Officer will demonstrate, model and inspire all employees to embrace and live the organizational values of Compassion, Integrity, Collaboration, Excellence, Service and Positivity in carrying out day to day tasks as well as in interactions with others.

Some Responsibilities Include:

• Hire, Manage and supervise the staff of the Angell at Essex clinic.
• Oversee and manage the clinic daily assigning duties to staff as needed for stocking, ordering, maintenance of equipment, scheduling, and other tasks essential to running the clinic.
• Provide veterinary services to both low income and traditional clients and their pets including annual preventative care, spay/neuter services, basic dental care and other surgical procedures that can be performed on a day case basis, as well as attending to minor walk in emergencies.
• Support the Essex Tech clinical instructors and training of Essex students by allowing them to  participate in all patient and client interactions except when those interactions are deemed potentially injurious to the student participant (e.g. dangerous animal) or exceedingly upsetting to a client (e.g. some euthanasia situations).
• Act as a mentor and teacher to students in the clinical program by including them in the daily routine of the practice, procedures and thought processes regarding management of patients.

About Angell at Essex

Angell at Essex opened in 2019 and boasts a beautifully renovated clinic area, including surgery suite with
viewing window, digital tabletop and dental radiography, ultrasonography, electrocautery, iM3 dental unit, and
full on-site laboratory with microscopy and IDEXX ProCyte, Catalyst, SediVue, and Snap Pro analyzers.
Veterinarians have consultation access to a mobile specialist ultrasonographer as well as access to specialist
colleagues at other hospitals in the Angell network. As a unique feature of our location, clinic employees also
have access to special services and facilities located in other vocational areas of the high school, including the
Maple Street Bistro and Bakery, auto body shop, cosmetology services, and farm grounds.

 Angell at Essex is located on the grounds of a vocational technology high school and trains high school
students for post-graduation employment as veterinary support staff, to continue on to further training in
veterinary technology or veterinary medicine, or to pursue other veterinary-adjacent careers. The clinic is open
Mondays through Fridays, year round, and serves the local Danvers and Essex Tech communities as well as
provides limited low-cost care for owners with documented financial need.

Requirements

• Qualified candidates must possess a DVM from an accredited school and have or have the ability to attain a MA veterinary license to practice.
• General Medicine or Shelter Medicine practice experience of five or more years One year rotating internship in veterinary medicine and surgery desired but not required
• Ability to use or learn the following software applications: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Signature or other electronic medical record software.
• Experience in teaching desired but not required
