The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty position in Primary Care. The qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate will determine appointment rank.
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to help teach students the art of general small animal practice, including dentistry with opportunities in exotic animal medicine if desired, while providing services to the Ames community and surrounding areas. The Primary Care service will work in collaboration with other specialty services to provide exceptional patient care and customer services to our constituents in Iowa, the Midwest, and the nation. Clinical duties will include occasional weekend and after-hours obligations. There will be significant time devoted to clinical teaching and services within the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). Additional efforts include: didactic and laboratory teaching, academic service, and outreach activities. Collaborative clinical research and publications, developing continuing education opportunities, and development of innovative teaching and/or clinical programs is encouraged. The percentage effort associated with these combined activities will be determined by mutual agreement between the candidate and the Department Chair of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.
The successful candidate will collaborate with the other faculty within the Primary Care service to develop student learning objectives in accordance with the service’s goals. Clinical teaching also includes instruction, proficiency, and demonstration of blood and urine sample collection, diagnostic sample collection, and physical examination techniques to veterinary students, technicians, house officers, and residents. Clinical teaching and proficiency in outpatient surgical techniques such as ovariohysterectomy, orchiectomy, onychectomy, mass removals, etc. are required.
The successful candidate will have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of technician, student, and house officer education. The candidate will be highly self-motivated, innovative, and will possess excellent communication skills and experience working with a diverse population. Furthermore, the candidate will demonstrate professional maturity with a leadership style that contributes to a positive culture, and have a compassionate and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the LVMC. All employees are expected to exhibit and convey good citizenship within the program, the department, college, university activities, collegial interactions, and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
-DVM or equivalent degree.
-A minimum of 3 years clinical small animal practice experience in a private or academic setting
- State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of employment.
In addition to the requirements above, below are minimum qualifications at the following ranks:
- CLINICAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: An established record of experience and scholarship in primary care, including board-certification, an advanced degree, and/or extensive experience in the respective professional field.
-CLINICAL PROFESSOR: Qualifications for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, board-certification, and an established record of national or international recognition for academic and professional accomplishments.
- ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR: An established record of experience and scholarship appropriate to each rank at Iowa State University, including board-certification and nationally or internationally recognized scholarship.
- An advanced degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent degree)
-Practice management experience
-Demonstrated interest in teaching
-Prior teaching or clinical instruction experience
-Additional years of clinical experience
-Documented experience in dentistry
