The Animal Emergency and Specialty Center of Knoxville, a state-of-the-art facility that sees over 13,000 cases annually, seeks newly-graduated veterinarians or those veterinarians seeking advanced training in Internal Medicine, Surgery and Emergency and Critical Care Medicine for a 12-month rotating internship.

Your Internship Experience: Approximately 40% of your time is devoted to primary case responsibility. Educational opportunities, including daily case rounds, didactic rounds, journal club, and CE opportunities, are available throughout the year. Elective rotations in other areas of interest can also be arranged. Our interns work with and teach Lincoln Memorial University veterinary students on clinical rotations at the AESC, and teach wetlabs at LMU’s main campus (all travel costs are reimbursed).
The AESC Facility: Animal Emergency & Specialty Center, a small animal emergency and critical care hospital and specialty referral center, is an ultra-modern facility with a comprehensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including mechanical ventilators, pulse oximetry, capnography, Doppler blood pressure monitoring, Snyder O2 cage, digital radiography, two ultrasound units, rigid and flexible endoscopy with lithotripsy capability, Axxent electronic brachytherapy radiation unit, four ORs, laparoscopic and orthopedic equipment, Thermofield hyperthermia system, chemotherapy pharmacy, chemotherapy biosafety hoods, video-microscopy, conference room, clinical research laboratory, GE light speed multi-slice helical CT scanner, and off-site MRI capability. In addition, AESC offers an in-house laboratory with CBC, blood chemistry, blood gas and electrolytes, lactate, and coagulation testing. We are also home to the Innovetive Cures for Cats I-131 thyroid treatment center.
The AESC Team: We are a vibrant team of a one medical oncologist, one residency-trained medical oncologist, a criticalist who is double-boarded in anesthesiology, two surgeons, a dermatologist, a criticalist and a residency-trained critical care doctor who work hand-in-hand with seven emergency doctors, one of whom is a certified acupuncturist, and a highly-trained and dedicated support staff.
AESC is situated just outside downtown Knoxville, an hour’s drive from the Smoky Mountains and minutes from the numerous lakes in the area. Tennessee offers a multitude of outdoor activities including skiing and snowboarding, kayaking and white water rafting, fishing, and countless hiking and biking trails, many scattered through nearby Smoky Mountain National Park. With no state income tax and a low cost of living, the quality of life is something to rave about.
What We Offer: We offer excellent mentorship and training to prepare you for a career in Emergency Medicine, general practice, or for a future residency program. As a successful intern, you will be able to thoroughly work up, diagnose, and treat difficult and complicated medicine, surgery, and emergency and critical care cases.
Selected candidates who are interested in a career in Emergency Medicine may also be eligible for a generous sign-on bonus following completion of the internship.
To apply for this internship, you must:
1. Be an American citizen or hold a valid visa for the entire internship program period. 2. Have a DVM or equivalent degree. 3. For foreign graduates, have successfully completed the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) certification program or the PAVE program. Have successfully completed the NAVLE. 4. Have successfully completed the Tennessee Board Exam. Be licensed in Tennessee.
