SoBran is seeking a Research Support Specialist II (Behaviorist) to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda/Poolesville, Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Research Support Specialist II (BEHAVIORIST) for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC). This description is not inclusive of all duties required to successfully complete the job each day. It is intended to reflect SoBran’s contractual obligations to the LARC. Employees are expected to complete all assigned duties each day. The function of the Behaviorist is to insure that the work is accomplished in accordance with SOPs, policies and guidelines associated with the expectations of the facilities. They are to serve as the subject matter expert in all areas of their respective group. This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel and issues within the group. We expect this person to be forward thinking and create plans to mitigate potential risks within their tasks. The behaviorist will assist program management in the efficient allocation of the budget, write and maintain reports and develop and maintain an effective relationship with the Government staff.
Description of Duties:
Understands and ensures staff follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards
Develops and fosters effective teamwork with staff and management team
Leads by example in ways that exceeds the expectation of the staff
Uses imagination and creativity when seeking solutions to problems, considers the potential impact on other areas of the program
Maintains and fosters good working relationship with clients on a daily basis
Works with the client to provide resolutions to operational issues/concerns in a timely manner
Reports all animal and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate chain of command
Perform scheduled routine behavior assessments on all laboratory animal species housed within DVR
Direct/Perform facility entry assessments on incoming primates and/or canines
Perform assessments on animals referred for abnormal behavior
Maintain animal records in behavior program computer database
Ensure all animals receive Environmental Enrichment as designated by The Guide and DVR SOP’s
Create/redesign behavioral/enrichment plans for individual animals when requested by management
Provide supplemental Environmental Enrichment for animals when deemed necessary
Socialize animals (NHP’s, canines, rabbits, swine) when possible
Assists in training classes
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
Schedule Requirements: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. The weekend hours are from 7 am to 11 am. In addition you will be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed.
Required Experience: 2 or more years of experience in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species preferred, will consider candidates with comparable experience and length of service in companion animal practice.
Employees’ appointed to the position of Behaviorist must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline
Certification: AALAS certification at the LAT level preferred. Expectation of obtaining certification at the LAT level within one year
